I started my serious walk in Christ three years ago. I was determined to break generational curse, and to live a much more peace and joyous life in Christ Jesus. My main goal was to ensure my children never had to go through what I went through as a child. Through life I have seen how independent women were glorified for having a house, car, a nice job. I said to myself at a very young age, I wanted to be her. An Independent Woman.
By eighteen I was out of my mother’s house, and I thought I was “it”. I had my own place, own car, and a nice career going for myself. Then came trouble, I was not expecting this. Independence left, and I became dependent. Dependent on others to help me, and dependent on Christ. The way my life was headed was not good spiritually. Externally you would have thought I had it all together. I went through several hurtful phases in my life divorce, bad relationships, family turned against me because I wanted to be a Christian.
But all I could think about is getting back to independency. Being on my own, not needing help from anyone, wanting things my way. Help came from beautiful souls and hearts, I gained a new family in Christ, a new friend. Jesus had this set up so good, I didn’t even understand it. But all I kept thinking about was independency.
I told my God mother, I want to be alone, alone in the world, alone in my home just alone. I was shame and embarrassed of the things I had went through, like I am the only one who goes through these things.
I said all of that to say this, as Christians we are dependent upon Jesus Christ daily. The disciples were dependent upon Jesus to tell them what to do and how to live. There was no such thing as independency, and there is no such thing as independency now. As Christians we are not to have an independent mindset. If we have that mindset, we can restrict that relationship with Christ. We can block out those He sends forth to help us in times of needs. There is nothing wrong with needing help at times, the independent mindset teaches us to handle things on our own, the independent mindset gives you false godlike powers. The independent mindset does not exist. Society has created this thing were women and men need to be independent and for a while, I fell for that trick. I felt like as a single mother of two boys that I had to have all my stuff together and a man was supposed to come and just join “my” table. I was wrong. As I grow and set back, I can see where I went wrong many of days. An independent mindset has no room in Christ. Because if you are not dependent on Christ, who are you relying on? Let’s change the way we think, likes to continue to have spiritual discernment to distinguish self from Christ. Is this something Jesus wants or is it something I (self) wants?
As Christians we are DEPENDENT upon Christ, we look to Him to tell us how to talk, walk, how to live, what to do, what to say, what to eat, and so much more. There is no independent mindset in this walk. We can listen to Jesus one day and then listen to ourselves. Or listen to Jesus when its beneficial to us.
One last question:
Are you independent or dependent upon Christ?
