In Today’s Times, we see so many ‘religious leaders’ so many people rushing into career just to seek a leadership position. But what is true Leadership? Is it about being in the forefront or being a servant to those you lead. Jesus came and walked the earth, and He is so humble when He does this. He did not come to walk in front of twelve men, who we call Disciples. He did not lead because He wanted to be seen or have fame. Jesus came because God sent Him, and even though Jesus has All Authority to do so, to be that leader always in the front, all ways wanting to be seen He didn’t. He carried Himself as a Humble Leader. He served His Disciples. He served the Communities He was in.

Servanthood is true Leadership (Mark 10:45). There are many definitions of the Servanthood leadership style, but I am going to define it with this one verse:

“After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.” John 13: 5 KJV

Servanthood is exactly what is displayed in this verse. Let me give you the Backstory.

Jesus did this when He knew His Time was near. He already knew the enemy had gotten into Judas the Iscariots (son of Simon) heart to betray Him, and that soon He will be crucified and sent back to God. (Read: John 13:1-4 KJV)

Imagine being a Manager of a Corporate Business making six figures if not more. Knowing that the meeting that was just had was about letting you go. For whatever reason, your Company that you dedicated a significant number of years to was about to fire you. No retirement, no unemployment, nothing. Would you as a leader host a feast with your team and wash their feet? Better yet, would you even accept their phone calls or keep in touch?

Most of us probably won’t. We would be too worried, to consumed by what to do next, how are we going to survive, and how are we going take care of financial obligations. Jesus was not worried at all. Instead, He started to Wash His Disciples Feet. Because He is a Leader who Serves His People! No matter what He was up against, not matter how He may have felt, he still chosed Servanthood.

Throughout the Bible I have not find once where Jesus used His power to manipulate, to deceive. The very thing some religious leaders do, some of your bosses or managers do. People get a little authority and forget who they are and where they came from. They start following after themselves and less from God.

Instead of looking up to other leaders who have come before us, let’s look up to Christ. He demonstrates True Leadership. The humbleness, serving His People with Acts of Service, Healing the Sick, Giving Vision to the Blind, the Lame can Walk! Thank you Jesus! Hallelujah!

I rejoice in being reminded of this, as a Business Students taken Leadership course all I can think about is Jesus and how He demonstrated leadership. His Leadership style is unmatched and so humbling. We all should be inspired to lead like Jesus, whether its Temporary Leadership or Permanent Leadership.

Blessings,

~Author J.M.
